This past January, the designer’s eponymous label, ERL, looked at high school memories for FW24 – defined by sports-inspired attire, layered looks and alluring fabrications that all carried the state’s easygoing persona. Now the designer is digging deeper into the Golden State with his new “Made in California” collection. During the final round of adjudication, students are interviewed by a panel of distinguished artistic professionals and faculty members from Southern California universities. Interviews include a live presentation by the students followed by a question-and answer-session. Out of 85 nominees, the following 16 students have been selected as semifinalists for the 2024 Artist of the Year in media arts.

Summer Youth Camps are a mainstay at Otis College, and we’re excited to see them grow in popularity each year. Our weeklong day camps offer fun opportunities for young artists to discover a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, and more in a creative and collaborative setting. The new facility includes individual work spaces/studios, a well-equipped Makerspace, conference rooms and the 2,000-square-foot Graduate Gallery.
Students are also placed into divisions based on the number of years they have been studying media arts. Students with a combination of three years of media art training in middle school, high school and private training are placed into Division 1. Students with less than three years of combined training are placed into Division 2. A minimum of two Division 2 students are guaranteed to be invited to be semifinalists. The school's numerous computer labs are full each period with students crafting and editing work as well as converting their creations into digital form, an essential skill that artists need to market their work.
Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.
“[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape. “I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green.
Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile. Visitors are greeted by a soothing waterscape and garden by Chad Morrill of California Waterscapes, Inc. The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home.

Through hands-on filmmaking, students learn film theory, film analysis, scriptwriting, editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, and gain industry-based technical and theoretical knowledge. Students have access to state-of-the-art equipment, participate in contests and film festivals, and meet visiting artists and professionals.
Summer of Art at Otis College of Art and Design is an intensive, college immersion experience designed for developing creatives in high school or beyond who are 14.5 years of age or older.
